Male Testosterone Therapy

Male Treatments & Procedures

Male Treatments & Procedures

Just because you are a man doesn’t mean how you look doesn’t matter! Gone are the days when manliness scoffed at healthy skin, facials, and aging rejuvenation. Men these days are wanting to look younger, have less wrinkles, and healthier looking skin.

I believe that cosmetic procedures, including cosmetic surgery, should be more conservative in men but still achieve our aesthetic goals whether it’s simply reducing an angry or tired look with Dysport or neck contouring to tighten a loose neck or jaw line. Men want faster recovery times with a rapid return to work and we don’t like to wear make-up or talk about plastic surgery. At Wright Surgical Arts we understand these issues and we will work with you to design solutions for your aesthetic needs with as little disruption as possible to your busy work and sports activities.

Men & Healthy Aging

It would be awesome if there was a simple pill we could take that would halt the aging process. Unfortunately there isn’t and aging will happen to all of us. But even though we are going to age doesn’t mean that we cant take care of ourselves increasing our longevity.

As we age our hormones are critical to how we age and we can better manage our aging if we manage our hormones. By balancing our hormones we can look and feel better, be healthier, and avoid disease and disability. At Rejuvenate Hormone Clinic we believe that you should be enjoying your lifestyle, keeping up the same activities, enjoying time with family, and an incredible sex life long into your 80’s!

Health is not just about your hormones, it is multifactorial and includes:

  1. Hormonal Balance
  2. A nutritious and balanced diet
  3. Exercise and activity
  4. Keeping stress at bay

Hormones Changes As You Age

Once you get into your late 20’s hormones will start to decline. This rate of decline plays a major roll in the timeframe we will age, meaning we age because our hormones diminish. Replacing these hormones is key to healthy aging.

When asked, most men will say the felt the most energized and healthy in their 20’s and 30’s.  You slept better, had more energy, sex drive was strong, muscle mass was at its peak, and you were able to stay lean. The reason you felt great during these times was that your hormones were balanced and your body was working as it was supposed to. Although we can’t reverse the clock making you younger we CAN make you feel like you once did. With balanced hormones, healthy diet and exercise this is possible.

What You Eat Is Important

We were designed for nutritious healthy foods. But today we have to fight GMO and processed foods, bioengineered produce, and food ladened with significant levels of pesticides and bad hormones. Here are some keys to a healthy lifestyle:

  • Maintain a Balanced Diet –  Protein, complex carbs, fat…it is important to know what you are eating.
  • Don’t Make to Many Changes at the Same Time – Too many changes too close together can make it challenging and will increase your chances of failure.
  • Take a Daily Vitamin – A good daily vitamin can help balance out the smaller things your body may be lacking.
  • Other Supplements May Be Needed – There is more your body needs that a daily multivitamin cant supply such as: fish oil, Vitamin E, C, and D3. Vitamin D has numerous health benefits as well as cancer prevention. Ask us for more information on the vitamins you may need.
  • Eat Clean – Making food at home that is unprocessed without preservatives is much healthier. Add fresh vegetables and fruits to your diet. Knowing what is in your food will help you feel better physically and mentally. It is rewarding to eat healthy, although it is unpractical to eat like this everyday when you begin to make it a habit you will begin to feel better about your self and your body.  Small steps for success.

Be Active

When people start thinking about being active and starting to exercise, it is often associated with dieting. We are not fans of dieting, we are all about lifestyle changes. Exercising often becomes monotonous, doing the same routines at the gym everyday. If you are doing the same thing day in and day out you will get burnt out and stop. What we prefer is for you to be active. Being active means you are out getting your heart rate to an appropriate level. That doesn’t have to just be the elliptical at the gym, although that works great! You can go biking, hiking, walking, climbing, running, etc… Get Creative! Do what works best for you. Studies have shown that 3, 30minute cardio work outs a week had the same benefit as taking zoloft. Meaning, working out significantly boosts your mental wellbeing too! Everything works better with healthy eating and activity. Your heart, blood flow, brain, and mood. When your body is working in a healthy manner you are able to handle the stressors of life better.

Avoid Stress

You are probably thinking, ‘easier said then done!” But when your hormones are balanced, as well as healthy eating combined with physical activity,  you will be able to handle stress significantly better. Here is what stress can do to your health:

  • Stress can cause brain deterioration such as alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Stress compromises the immune system leaving your body open to attack from bacteria and viruses.
  • Stress can fast track the aging process not only on the inside but to your face and skin.
  • Stress can deplete your bodies valuable nutrients leaving you open to disease and sickness.
  • Stress can also deplete your hormones interrupting the interrelationships that your hormones have with each other that help keep you healthy and give longevity.

If you know what stressors you have in your life then half the battle is done. Now it is just learning how to cope with them. If you don’t know then sit down and think through your routines and work life and once you discover what they are, you can begin the process of kicking stress to the curb.

Gentlemen, Restart Your Engines!! Male hormones are what makes us men. These hormones build our muscle mass, make us stronger and taller. They create the changes in our voice, develop body hair, and give us our sex drive. Understanding what happens with our hormones as we age is important not only for our health but for our masculinity.

Male Hormone Replacement Therapy

As we age, a man’s ability to produce hormones naturally begins to decrease. As our hormones decline our ability to handle the stresses of life, ability to maintain muscle mass and bone density, and continue a healthy sex drive becomes endangered. These hormonal imbalances that occur as we age are a normal part of the aging process but are avoidable and reversible. We are committed to helping men who are struggling from imbalances of their hormones. He will work closely with you to find which hormones you need replenished so you can live a full and accomplished life.

Male Hormone Facts

The following are some things every man should know about his hormones and hormone replacement therapy:

  • Hormones control the chemistry of your body. Without them, your body wouldn’t function. Our hormone treatment programs address those hormones that most impact the aging process and quality of life.
  • Hormone treatment is safe when done correctly.
  • All of the hormones are important but testosterone is the most critical as it is responsible for most of the symptoms in andropause.
  • Male hormone therapy is healthy.

Getting It Right

Optimal hormone levels are not the same for everyone. This is where a lot of hormone programs and doctors make their mistakes. We are focused on getting your hormones back to the levels that work best for you. Lab testing is an important part of our treatment plan but how you feel and how your symptoms are responding to treatment weighs heavily into your care.

Laboratory Testing is Important

We relie heavily on how you feel (subjective), but lab testing is the objective way to know exactly what is going on with the hormones inside your body. Our objective is to tailor your treatment plan, not only to your goals but to what your body is telling us through your hormone levels. These lab tests give us the ability to create the perfect care plan for what you need. After a 3 to 6 month period of having balanced hormones and a healthy lifestyle, men will lose fat, regain muscle, and as a result, have a more full life. Lab testing gives us the information we need to address this situation effectively and to make adjustments to treatment as necessary.

Treatment Expectations

At Wright Surgical Arts we are committed to treating your andropause symptoms. When you meet with us we create an individualized plan to address exactly what you need. No two patients are the same and no two treatment plans are the same.

We start by checking a detailed blood test to evaluate your current hormone levels as well as assist you by create a plan to help you live a more healthy lifestyle. As a man your body was meant to be strong, feel good, have excellent sexual activity, mentally strong, and propelled to live life with passion and enjoyment. imbalance of hormones can limit this but balance can give you what you have been missing.

When to Expect Results

Typically, most men began to see and feel the results of treatment soon after treatment is started. Every man is different so results can vary and also depends on your commitment to a healthier life, but below is what to generally expect.

In the first week, you will begin to notice your mind working faster a sense of clarity. Short term memory also improves.

In weeks 5 and 6 you will see apparent improved results from your workouts and improved sexual performance. It’s during these weeks that you will feel like you are yourself again.

Testosterone truly is the key hormone for the male body. It’s what makes a man a man. It is produced and secreted primarily by the testicles of males called leydig cells. Testosterone then travels in our blood stream, binding to specific receptors on different tissues with the largest concentration in the brain and heart. When testosterone levels decrease with age, your receptor sites are unable to absorb the appropriate amount of testosterone, which leads to all of the symptoms of low T. What we are talking about is male menopause, also called andropause.

Low Testosterone State (hypogonadism) – What is Low T?

  • Low testosterone (Low T), also known as hypogonadism, occurs when a man’s body produces little or no testosterone and has associated signs and symptoms. Low testosterone refers to lowered testosterone in the blood.
  • Normal testosterone levels for healthy men are approximately 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). Men with Low T generally have testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL. Low T can be caused by certain medical conditions, such as genetic problems, chemotherapy, injury, or other hormonal problems.
  • Testosterone begins to decrease in men in their late 20’s, with low T symptoms beginning typically in the late 30’s. There is good news! Low T can be fixed, easily and safely. However, it is critical that the treatment be done correctly.

Testosterone Facts

The hormone testosterone is an anabolic steroid. “Steroid” is a word that engenders negative connotations with those who follow sports; but the bodies of both men and women produce the anabolic steroid testosterone naturally. Men, however, require it to live. The negative connotation associated with anabolic steroids comes from the many athletes and body builders who use/abuse combinations of synthetic testosterone for performance enhancement—a practice called “stacking.” Our providers do not use synthetic testosterone in our client’s treatment plans, and they do not stack testosterone in men. Our providers only use bioidentical hormones—which means they are exactly the same as what your body would produce naturally. Further, our providers will only replace your testosterone to healthy levels—not beyond.

If done correctly, there are no side effects from hormone therapy. Hormone replacement therapy is safe, and more importantly, it’s healthy. In fact, restoring testosterone to pre-andropause levels is vital to a man’s health, and improves his chances for avoiding illness and disease as he ages.

Testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. Excess estrogen increases prostate cancer risk. Please see our page on estrogen for more details.

Replacing testosterone should be done in conjunction with balancing other hormones, particularly thyroid. Please see our page on hormone balance for more details.

Testosterone is the feel good, sex drive hormone for men. With male hormone therapy, you should begin to feel better in 1 to 2 weeks; and providing you have good lifestyle habits (e.g. a healthy diet, sufficient physical activity, and stress reduction), you will feel like a new man in 4-6 weeks after your hormones have balanced.

The symptoms of andropause and the symptoms of low testosterone are very similar. This is because the symptoms of andropause are caused by the imbalance of several hormones, but the most important is testosterone.

Testosterone levels are declining at an accelerated rate in recent years due to pollutants and petrochemicals in the environment. Though highly unusual 10 years ago, we are now commonly treating men in their 30s who are presenting with testosterone levels typical of a 60 year old man (not receiving treatment).

Signs and symptoms associated with Low T

In order to diagnose Low T, our providers may ask you about any symptoms you may be experiencing as well as test your blood to measure your testosterone level. Below are some symptoms that men with Low T may experience. If you are experiencing any of these, you may want to talk to our providers about being tested for Low T.”

  • Decreased energy, motivation, and self-confidence

Testosterone Pellet therapy has been around since the 1930s–the concept is probably about the same age as Premarin, but much like other bioidentical hormones, a lack of approval from the FDA has left the public fearful of the consequences of use.

In 2008, the FDA gave its blessing to Slate Pharmaceutical’s Testopel, bioidentical testosterone pellet therapy designed exclusively for men. Many have discovered the ease and effectiveness of this delivery method for testosterone, making it increasingly popular for men and women.

Testosterone delivered by pellet implant, has been used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It may also be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need adequate levels of testosterone for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels.

In men, testosterone pellet therapy can improve erectile dysfunction (including throwing out your Viagra) and ensure regardless of age, you can keep up with your high-profile job and those youthful co-workers walking through the door. Low testosterone is among the most common issues facing the aging male. It affects multiple aspects of their lives, including sex drive, incontinence and maintenance of muscle mass. Testosterone is also the hormone of desire and arousal.

Insertion is a simple in-office procedure and is less painful than drawing blood. Your doctor applies local anesthesia and makes an incision in the upper hip area, placing the pellet inside, which is smaller than a Tic-Tac and only slightly larger than a grain of rice. No stitches are necessary – the incision is so small, it can be closed up with a piece of tape, although sometimes a single stitch may be used.

Safety is the most common concern when it comes to new drugs or drugs that a majority of the public is unfamiliar with. In 2009, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published a study analyzing the data from multiple studies of pellet therapy as far back as December of 2003 through April of 2008. The study focused on male subjects and found that 86 percent of the patients were satisfied with the improvement of their symptoms and the ease of insertion. No patient that followed post-insertion directions experienced any adverse side effects, such as infection or pellet extrusion.

ABOUT Testosterone Pellets

TESTOSTERONE PELLETS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP RESTORE LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS

Helps restore testosterone levels for 4 to 5 months, sometimes up to 6 months

TESTOSTERONE PELLET THERAPY MAY BE THE RIGHT FIT FOR IF YOU:

  • Are looking for a long-acting testosterone replacement therapy
  • Would like a product with dosing every 4 to 5 months
  • Can manage the treatment regimen
  • Are interested in an in-office procedure

TESTOSTERONE PELLETS ARE DISCREET

Pellets are implanted under the skin and they slowly release testosterone over time

They do not carry risk of transference like creams can.

Pre and Post Procedure Screening:

We will check a hormone panel at your first visit to evaluate a number of hormones that could be the cause of your symptoms. Once those are complete our providers will review the blood work and make a recommendation of the type and amount of hormone replacement. After your pellets have been placed there will be a 1 month blood test to recheck your hormone levels to make sure that the appropriate progress is being made.

Pellet Placement Procedure:

It is an in-office procedure taking about 15 minutes.

Recovery

You may apply ice to the site for 20–30 minutes every hour after insertion, as needed. Remember, you might experience tenderness at the site for a few days following insertion as well as some minor redness and swelling. Avoid hot tubs, swimming, or full water immersion of the insertion site for 2 weeks. The bandage may be removed after 48 hrs but leave the steri strips for about 7-10 days. Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 24–72 hours.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Discharge from insertion site
  • Excessive redness or swelling
  • Chills and/or fever greater than 101.5 F
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Excessive tenderness
  • Any other symptoms
