Studio portrait of a beautiful young woman with flawless skin posing against a gray background. Dermaplaning concept

Dermaplaning is an effective tool to bring back smooth, dewy, youthful skin. This unique form of mechanical exfoliation is especially effective on skin that has sun damage, fine lines, and is dull and dry. With no downtime or pain, this quick procedure can transform skin in less than an hour.

As skin ages, the turnover of cells slows down, resulting in a buildup of dead cells on the surface. This buildup causes the skin to look sallow and dry. It also traps oil in pores, which can lead to blockages and breakouts. Dermaplaning removes these dead skin cells, as well as fuzzy facial hair, revealing the sheen of fresh skin beneath. But how is dermaplaning done, and what can it do for you?

HOW IT’S DONE

After the skin has been cleansed, an aesthetician takes a surgical scalpel. Holding the skin taut, the scalpel is gently drawn along the skin at a 45-degree angle in quick, short strokes. This works to remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair (vellus hair). The fresh skin that is revealed is brighter, smoother, and more youthful. Dermaplaning removes the dull buildup of skin cells, restoring the dewy glow of young skin.

There is no downtime for this procedure. There may be some mild redness, but it quickly fades. It can be done over the lunch hour, and it is completely painless. Dermaplaning is effective on all skin types, but it should not be used if there is active acne.

THE BEAUTIFUL RESULTS

Immediately after the procedure, skin looks smoother and brighter. Revealing the fresh, young skin cells below the surface improves texture and tone. The complexion will have a healthy glow the very first day.

In time, the increased cell turnover that results from dermaplaning gives skin a whole host of benefits. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. Dark spots fade and acne scars are reduced. Pores are clear of clogs caused by dead skin cell buildup, which can reduce breakouts. Skin is smooth, even textured, and healthy.

Without excess surface cells and fine hairs, the texture of the skin is much silkier. Makeup goes on more smoothly, for a more even coverage of foundation, blush, and highlighter. Fine facial hairs often stand out from makeup, and having them removed makes skin look smoother and flawless. Some people worry about hair growing back thicker or darker, but the texture of the hair does not change. Superficial vellus hair is so fine that the regrowth is subtle.

Another advantage of this kind of gentle mechanical exfoliation is those skin products are able to penetrate more effectively. The active ingredients in serums, lotions, and creams are able to sink into the skin where they can do their work, rather than being uselessly absorbed by dead cells. Waste is reduced and skin products give better results.

THINGS TO KNOW

Fresh skin is especially sensitive to sun exposure after dermaplaning, so it’s important to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF. 21 days of old skin cells are removed in the process, so it is helpful to repeat it about every four weeks to maintain a radiant glow.

Most importantly, you don’t want someone using a sharp blade on the tender skin of your face if they aren’t sufficiently qualified. The Med Spa staff at Wright Surgical Arts is made up of Master Aestheticians who are held to the highest standards of skill and professionalism. You can be confident that your skin is in good hands.
